Swaaras in interludes

I have been listening to a lot of tamil songs recently especially for the sake of my other blog. I have been posting most of Ilayaraja's songs there and found that he has used violin, guitar and other percussions more in interludes. Rahman has been using them too but he created his own distinct style in composing music using other instruments as well. For instance, im sure most of the people came to know about saxaphone more cos of the movie duet. Also he has used swaras in most of the songs even in BGMs no matter whether the songs sounds little carnatic or not. This has not been attempted by others that frequently. Ofcourse swaras form the basis of music yet most of the MD's interpret them using instruments. Let me enlist few of those songs with swaras.

  • Nila kaigiradhu (Indhira) : This is a very beautiful song sung by Harini and these swaras add even more beauty to the song and sounds more divine. Listen it here:

Nila Kaaigirathu.m...

  • Jeans : The theme music as well as the kannodu kaanbadhellam song comes with swaras. But it sounds too professional.

  • Fana (Ayutha ezuthu) : A very famous song from this movie which is shot in a discotheque. There is this pre-conceived notion that swaras are usually included carnatic based songs. This is a very peppy number and the swaras beautifully flow through.

  • Bombay BGM : I just cant stop listening to this very beautiful BGM from Bombay. This BGM comes whenever Aravind Swamy sees Manisha koirala before their marriage.

Pa Sa Ni Sa duet.m...

  • Tere Bina (Guru) : A lovely song from the movie guru, more of qawali type with awesome swaras in interludes

And the list goes on...

Nice musical post from you :)

//Also he has used swaras in most of the songs even in BGMs no matter whether the songs sounds little carnatic or not//
The raagas on which some of the pieces that you have mentioned are based on:
Nila Kaigirathu - Some Kalyani (Not sure)
Kannodu kanbadhellaam - Abheri
Fanaa - Suddha Dhanyasi

Wanted to add, almost all the times the swaras will be based on a raaga only in Rahman's songs. However, I am not sure about whether the swaras are part of that raaga or not (meaning Aarohanam, Avarohanam, etc., etc.)....

mm. you mooted my thought ..

well first nila kaigirathu is hameer kalyani..

Kannodo kanbadhellam is the inspiration of yester year Konjum Konjum salangi Singaravelanay deva ( Most Most Most famous nadhaswaram / vocal combination ). S.Janaki mam proliferate the modulation to the core.

comming to IR usage its his legendray transation, learning to hunger, trend setting, or what ever u can pick up..

if u read his books closely like Pal nila padhai or what ever then u may feel his work behind the magum opus history he created.

why such patterns comes?
where is the transalation?
How many come backs he did ?
etc etc..
its very very interesting.

mm.. comming to comment 4 the actual post.
in connect to the light music ( melisai ) i may say its a usuage or pattern. every body used in depends on the stituation, requirement, drive by directors.

well observed.

A.R.R uses more frequently and nicely packaged also.

sorry to spam.. just a last comment..

most of the songs A.R.R used swaras as its a stituational one..

Nila kaigirathu - a girl is singing a song to relax his dad accompanying with his mama paiyan.. so he picked simple but more beautiful soothey kalyani family for that.

kannodu kanbadhellam - as picturized its bharathanatiyam composition..

Fanaaa - is kind of hichoo based song approach. (

but this is not an axiom..
he effectively used it different stituation as well.

nice post B...... IR is known for his usage of Violin interludes.... ARR uses more of flute in his music.....

wat I like abt ARR's music is the way these swaras gel into the song so well!!

Fanaa is my fav of this list!! I also like his other songs where he uses lotsa humming rather than Swaras..... for example, 'hey goodbye nanbaa', 'chinna chinna aasai', 'new york nagaram'......
